6 Minute Mile on Treadmill: Set Speed to 10.0 MPH (+ Pace Chart)

Ten miles an hour is a 6:00 mile, and the one number on this page to check first is your treadmill's maximum speed. Many home machines stop at 10 or 12 mph, so a 6:00 mile can be the very top of the dial.

Rep splits at 10.0 mph

At this speed most treadmill sessions are intervals, not one long run. Split times per rep, once the belt is up to speed.

800 m2:59

The treadmill takes a few seconds to climb from your recovery jog to 10.0, so start the rep clock when the belt settles, not when you press the button. At the end, drop the speed before stepping off. If you need to stop fast, step onto the side rails and use the safety key.

If you hold 6:00

Full-distance times at a steady 10.0 mph. These are race-level numbers for most runners.

10.0 mph is not a 10:00 mile

The most common mix-up on this pace: 10.0 mph is a 6:00 mile, while a 10:00 mile is 6.0 mph. The two numbers swap places because pace and speed are each 60 divided by the other. If a plan says “10” without a unit, check whether it means mph or minutes before you press it.

The other mix-up is kilometers. 6:00 per kilometer is 10 km/h, about 6.2 mph, an easy run, not a 6:00 mile.

Incline at 10.0 mph

10.0 mph is near the top of the 6.5–11 mph range in Jones and Doust (1996). Air resistance is real at this speed, so 1% is the best-supported setting if you want the treadmill to match outdoor effort.

Jones AM, Doust JH. A 1% treadmill grade most accurately reflects the energetic cost of outdoor running. J Sports Sci. 1996.

FAQ

How fast is a 6 minute mile in mph?

A 6 minute mile is exactly 10.0 mph, because 60 ÷ 6 = 10. In metric it is about 16.1 km/h, or 3:44 per kilometer.

Can a home treadmill do a 6 minute mile?

Many can, but not all. Home treadmills commonly top out at 10 or 12 mph, and some compact or walking models stop well below that. Check the maximum speed in your manual before planning 10.0 mph reps.

What 5K time is a 6 minute mile pace?

Holding 10.0 mph for a full 5K gives 18:38. A 10K at the same speed is 37:17.

Is 6:00 per kilometer the same as a 6 minute mile?

No. 6:00 per kilometer is 10 km/h, about 6.2 mph, an easy run. A 6:00 mile is 10.0 mph, the other way round.
